Rolph Gervais ignited his team with a header to help the University of The Bahamas Mingoes men's soccer team take care of the California Intercontinental University Falcons 3-0 to complete the two-game sweep on Friday, February 13 at the Roscow A.L. Davies Soccer Fields.
Midfielder Gervais broke the 0-0 match in the 74th minute before captain Ronaldo Green shut the door with two goals after.
UB won 4-1 the previous day in the first match. Green scored a hat-trick in that one and forward Kevin Thomas nailed that match shut. Alex Thompson, head coach for UB said that this was the most professional his team has ever played.
"We faced a team that sat back against us and it forced the guys to think and come up with some solutions," Thompson said. "We had some patterns of play that we were trying to use to open the game up but ultimately it came down to some individual brilliance, great leadership from all of the captains and some freshman stepping up in a big way."
It was clear that UB was the better attacking team as they were able to get into the Falcons defensive third a few times but they were unable to convert the shots to goal.
Gervais, a freshman, changed all that in 74th minute when he shot the ball onto the cross bar. However, he was the first one to recoup his miss as he put the ball into the back of the net with a header to give his side the 1-0 lead for his first goal as a Mingoe.
"It was my first goal and I was waiting for that," Gervais said. "We worked hard for it. I worked hard for it and it was amazing."
Green got the long ball 18 yards out three minutes later and dribbled past two defenders before scoring the brace with his left foot as UB went up 2-0.
The nail in the coffin came in the 79th minute when Green got the through pass from Thomas. He used his pace to get past the Falcons' central defender before placing the ball past the keeper. UB lead 3-0 as the final whistle blew minutes later.
"The plan the coach gave us was the plan that set us up for victory and we can't give no other thanks but to the coaching staff," Green said. "They helped us to keep our head and as you can see everyone started to lose their head and the coaching staff kept it together and did their jobs."
Goalkeeper Antonio Beckford and his defense got the clean sheet in this game.
Green scored five goals over the two matches as UB scored seven goals in total while conceding just one goal. It was a good showing for UB in the first time hosting a university team from the United States.
UB returned to action on Sunday, February 15 against Inter Nassau in the Bahamas Men's Soccer League. They sit atop the table with a 6-0-2 win/lose/draw record
