Mingoes men close out local track and field season

Several University of The Bahamas Mingoes track and field men's athletes secured wins and had a strong performance at the Diana Lynn Thompson Track and Field Classic on Saturday at the Thomas A. Robinson Track and Field Stadium.

Lhevinne Joseph secured the victory in the open men 800 meters (m) as he held off teammate Jackson Ozias. Joseph ran 1:55.11 for a season's best. Ozias clocked 2:03.80 for the second-place finish.

"Today (Saturday) was perfect weather," Joseph said. "I ran my second-best time ever. It was good to run with the under-20 boys and they helped to push me."

Rashad Evans battled an injury to win the open men's javelin throw with a best throw of 40.75m (133' 8-3/8") on his first throw.

"My throws were not too bad," Evans said. "It was one of my best meets as I was able to get consistent throws in the round."

Jahlandon Wilson won both the open men 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles. He powered through the 110m hurdles in 14.82 seconds after clipping a hurdle early on. The 400m hurdles had him clocking 58.05 seconds. It was enough to hold off teammate Rowan Sands who ran 59.85 seconds for the second-place finish.

"I hit a hurdle and all most fell but was able to recover," Wilson said. "I had to keep pushing and going forward."

Devilus Culmer also picked up a victory for UB after throwing the shot put for 9.38m (30' 9-1/4") in the open men's shot put.

Jason Ferguson powered his way to a third-place finish in the under-20 boys after crossing the finish line in 49.82 seconds.

The team will get a two-week rest before competing in their first international meet Saturday, March 7 at the Embry-Riddle Eagle Invite in Daytona Beach, Florida.
