Mingoes men secure wins at DTSP meet
It was just their second competition of the season but the University of The Bahamas men's track and field teams was able to secure wins at the DTSP Wolfpack Track and Field Classic on Saturday at the Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium.
George Minnis won the men's open 100 meters (m) in a time of 11.21 seconds. His teammate Devilus Culmer was third in a time of 11.27 seconds.
"I felt like I tensed up too much in the heats," Minnis said. "I executed a better race in the final and had a faster time but it was not what I was looking for."
Culmer was busy in the field winning the men's open high jump and shot put events. He cleared 1.75m (5' 9") in the high jump and threw the shot put for 8.65m (28' 4-1/2").
Rashad Evans won the men's open javelin after posting 41.97m (137' 8-1/4"). Hurdler, Jahlandon Wilson, posted 14.41 seconds to win the men's open 110m hurdles.
Lhevinne Joseph ran the 400m after opening the season in the 800m last week. He won that race in 49.51 seconds. Freshman Rowan Sands got the bronze in 53.80 seconds.
"The biggest fear was getting catch," Joseph said. "I felt the fatigue coming off the last 100 meters. I should have held back more so I could have more to finish with. I feel confident and I know I am strong."
Jackson Ozias did not get the job done down the homestretch as he settled for the silver medal in 2:06.08.
Jason Ferguson placed fifth overall in the boys under-20 400m with a time of 50.80 seconds.
UB men returns to track and field on Saturday, February 7 at the Devynne Charlton Invitational at the Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium.
