Mingoes open season at T-Bird Flyers Classic
The University of The Bahamas men's track and field team got their season underway in the T-Bird Flyers Track and Field Classic at the Thomas A. Robinson Track and Field Stadium this past weekend.
They were able to secure several top-three finishes. UB's head coach, Ednal Rolle said it was a great start although it was not the full team.
"We are starting now to meet the standards of NAIA and the athletes are now having to move towards making those standard. I am looking for the athletes to progress through the season," Rolle said.
Lhevinne Joseph was second in the open men 800-meter race after stopping the clock on 1:57.32. UB's Jason Ferguson ran 2:05.60 to place seventh overall in that timed final.
"The 800-meter was comfortable but I do believe that I could have changed some things tactically but after that it was a comfortable race," Joseph said.
He and Ferguson teamed up with Devilus Culmer and George Minnis for the open men's 4x400m relay. They finished second in 3:27.42.
Culmer placed second in the open men javelin throw with a best throw of 45.25m (148' 5-1/2").
Minnis clocked 11.30 seconds in the 100m heats and 23.32 seconds in the open men 200m heats but did not make the final.
They return to action at the DTSP Wolfpack Classic on Saturday, January 17 at 9 a.m. at the Thomas A. Robinson. Track and Field Stadium.
