Mingoes draw against United FC, take BFA top spot
The University of The Bahamas men's soccer team failed on a last minute scoring opportunity in a torrential downpour against United FC but still held on for a 0-0 draw and the top spot in The Bahamas Football Association men's league.
With the draw on Sunday, The Mingoes now have six wins and two draws and first place in the league with 20 points. United FC sits in second spot with 17 points in the standings with five wins, two draws and one loss.
The match of the two top teams—UB Mingoes and United FC—started as a sunny and clear afternoon match at The Roscow A.L. Davies Pitch.
United had several opportunities but Mingoes goalie Antonio Beckford was able to make a stand at the line for the Mingoes with seven saves in the first half and 11 overall.
The Mingoes attackers including Phil Pilgrim and Kevin Thomas had some early opportunities as well but the first half ended in a 0-0 tie. The Mingoes offence had eight shots on goal in the first half but could not find the back of the net.
Out of the half The Mingoes had a few close calls but were able to hold off the United attack. At about the 70th minute the skies seemed to open up and torrential rain followed. Not only was visibility impacted but ball control was impacted by the many puddles on the pitch.
Head Coach Alexander Thompson said the team is happy to be atop the standings but could have easily won the match that ended in a 0-0 draw.
"The game was a very intense defensive battle" he said. "We operated in a low block, hoping to neutralize United's pace in the open field. The game finished 0-0, with both teams squandering good opportunities."
The Mingoes next play Cavalier FC 4:30 p.m. Sunday February 1, 2026 at The Roscow A.L. Davies Pitch.
