Mingoes take down Crimestoppers in 104-86 victory

The University of The Bahamas men's basketball team returned to the court Thursday after a two-week break with a 104-86 victory against the Royal Bahamas Police Force Crimestoppers in UB Showcase action.

UB was led by Kevaro Russell who finished with 30 points. Terrance Higgs and John McKenzie finished with 25 and 22 points respectively. Shemeco Albury rounded out the scoring for UB with 16 points.

"On defense, I feel like we could have done better as a team," said Russell. "Luckily, tonight, I was making some open shots. We're looking to carry this energy into Thursday and try to get better and better after every game. Keep the winning streak that we have going and end the season with a bang."

UB overcame a slow start and used a 57-32 second half advantage to pull away and take down Crimestoppers.

McKenzie came up huge in the fourth quarter for UB with back-to-back and-ones that put his team up 87-76 with 5:32 remaining in the game.

Russell dunked the ball on a fastbreak to extend Mingoes lead to 51-46 with 8:21 left in the third quarter. Jarius Hall went coast-to-coast and pulled up and made the three-pointer to give Mingoes the 56-46 lead as Crimestoppers called the timeout with 7:34 remaining in that quarter. UB led 75-65 at the end of three quarters.

Shemeco Albury connected on a three-pointer to give Mingoes their first lead in the game 27-25 with 6:01 left in the second quarter.

"I feel like I contributed good on defense bringing effort and intensity," Albury said. "My mindset is to be at the right place at the right time and read off my teammates."

Higgs made a layup with 1:13 left in the first half to put the Mingoes up 42-40. UB led 47-46 at the half.

First quarter, Kevaro Russell made a jump shot and got the friendly bounce to stop the Crimestoppers 7-0 run. Mingoes down 7-2 with 7:25 left in the first quarter. He finished with a team high 30 points.

More from Russell in the first quarter saw him making a shot from deep to cut the Crimestoppers lead to 19-17 with 1:20 left in the first quarter.

UB returns to action against the Bahamas Department of Correction Challengers on Thursday, February 26.
