Mingoes streak broken in nail-biter against NFS

Despite three players in double figures, The University of The Bahamas Mingoes lost a nail-biter to The Nassau Flight Services Ballers 76-72 in UB Showcase action Tuesday night at The Kendal Isaacs Gym.

Terrance Higgs put up 18 points and nine rebounds, Kevaro Russell scored 16 points, and Jerehemiah Miller scored 14 to go along with 21 rebounds to lead The Mingoes in the loss.

NFS forward Tamiko Higgs scored 32 points to lead all scorers, while Lamont McPhee added 11 points in the win. The Ballers recently won the 2025 Bahamas Government Departmental Basketball Association championship.

The Mingoes fell into a 6-2 hole early in the game before taking a 14-6 lead with just under seven minutes left in the first quarter.

The second quarter started off back and forth. After it was tied up at 1:53 at 29 points, UB ended the half on a 9-0 run to lead 38-29 at the half.

UB settled in and started converting buckets as they held their largest lead of the game with a 48-29 lead with 5:42 left in that quarter. NFS closed the gap as UB led 54-46 at the end of the quarter.

UB trailed 70-68 with just 1:32 left in the game. NFS went up 72-68 with just under a minute left before UB made a layup to cut the lead to 72-70 with 44 seconds left on the clock. UB missed key buckets down the stretch as they fell 76-72.

"We wanted to have a situation where we would end the game very tired," head coach Bacchus Rolle said. "In the third quarter, we came out with a full-court press, and we wanted to see how our guys would operate in a fatigued situation. We kept some key players on the floor, but we didn't have it at the end."

Rolle added key injuries also slowed them down in the fourth quarter, which prevented a response to NFS' late surge.

"Two of our better guards tweaked their ankle, so we just didn't have it to bring it home," he added.

Jarius Hall also added nine points in the loss, while Shemeco Albury and Terrance Higgs had five steals each on the night for The Mingoes.

The Mingoes now sport a 3-1 record on the showcase season.

Next up for UB is their Homecoming game against the Department of Customs Taxmen 7 p.m. November 7 at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium.
