Mingoes battle but fall to Panthers
For the first time in three tries this season, the University of The Bahamas Mingoes women's volleyball team won a set against the league leading Panthers. However, they fell 3-1 in the New Providence Volleyball Association action on Sunday at the D.W. Davis Gymnasium.
UB dropped the match 25-14; 22-25; 17-25 and 25-13. UB was led by setter Zarria Rose who came away with 11 points that included eight points from her service. Middle blocker Patrice Ferguson got eight attacking points for a total of 10 points. Outside hitter Hanna McBride chipped in with seven points.
The Panthers' Janelle Curtis led all scorers with 20 points. Her teammate La'Tavia Braynen scored 10 points in the win.
Raymond 'Rhymes' Wilson, UB's head coach said he saw some good habits from the match.
"They are beginning to understand what is required of them to play well to win," Wilson said. "We didn't play very well at the end. Or the first three sets, we did well on our passing and we blocked against a big team. We realized what we need to do to defend against this team."
UB was unable to get into a groove early in the first set where they went down 8-3. They were able to score some points on the board but were still down 16-9. A 5-1 run by the Panthers had UB down 21-10 as the set ended 25-14 in favor of the Panthers.
UB got off to a better start in the second set as they went up 8-7. UB took a 13-12 lead and Rose stepped up to serve. She was able to serve her team to a 9-0 run to lead 22-12. They went on to win that set 25-16.
It was a strong start for UB in the third set going up to a 6-2 lead before the Panthers took a 16-12 lead midway in the set. UB's defense started to cool off as Panthers won the set 25-17.
UB faltered early in the third set as they went into an early 8-1 hole. They never recovered as they lost 25-13.
UB returns to action against the Tech Titans at 7.30 p.m. on Monday, February 16 at the D.W. Davis Gym.
