Mingoes fall to Warhawks

The University of The Bahamas Mingoes was looking to avoid back-to-back losses in the New Providence Volleyball Association but that didn't happen as they fell in straight sets to the Warhawks at the D.W. Davis Gymnasium on Sunday.

They dropped the match 25-17; 25-22; and 25-17. Assistant head coach Sydline Justilien said her team played good in the first two sets.

"The first two sets, they came out excited to play. Going into the third set, they just were flat," Justilien said. "We're looking forward to the next game to bring up that energy - remind them of fundamental volleyball, and play the game. They talk a little more in the first two sets, and remembering the defense that we taught them, and then going into the third set, the defense went out the door."

UB's captain and outside hitter Anjeniker Joseph led UB with 11 points with seven coming from attack and four on her serves. Middle blocker Alexander Pinder scored five points.

Vanessa Sawyer led the Warhawks with 18 points.

It was a sluggish start for UB in the first set as they went down 8-5. They were able to make it 10-9 on Davanna Douglas service. UB got into a 16-11 hole before going down 21-17 to give up four unanswered points to lose the set 25-17.

The second set was very competitive as UB's defense stepped up. They were able to make it a close game trailing 11-10. The game remained close as UB took a 22-21 lead. They lost the lead and they lost that set 25-22.

The third set is one that UB wants to forget. Their defense was off as they were down 20-8 but they were able to make it closer as the score was 20-13. The set ended 25-17 to the Warhawks.

They sport a 5-5 win/loss record on the season.

UB gets the rest of the week off and will take on the league leaders, the Panthers at 7.30 p.m. on Monday, February 9 at D.W. Davis Gymnasium.
