Mingoes women close out local track and field season

Several University of The Bahamas Mingoes women's track and field athletes secured wins and had a strong performance at the Diana Lynn Thompson Track and Field Classic on Saturday at the Thomas A. Robinson Track and Field Stadium.

Brianique Strachan ran strong as she won the women's open 100 meters (m) and 200m once more and dropped times. Strachan won the 100m in a personal best time of 11.82 seconds. Her teammate Deamia Bowe crossed the finish line in second after stopping the clock on 12.29 seconds.

"I was finally able to break that 12-seconds barrier," Strachan said. "I was working on that and God is good. I wanted to get out with power and accelerate, do not look at the clock and run through to the line."

Strachan returned later in the 200m to win that race in 25.39 seconds to lead UB's quartet. Tianna Bottle placed third in 25.90 seconds. Bowe (26.16) and Marquell Newbold (26.46) were fourth and fifth respectively.

Kendera Munroe ran her first open women 400m hurdles for the season. She was able to win that race after running 1:06.98.

"I was able to carry out everything that I practiced," Munroe said. "I got out how I was supposed to and was able to maintain so I could stay at a consistent rhythm and I was able to brought it home."

Jamaya Rolle clipped a few hurdles but managed to place third in the under-20 girls 100m hurdles after running 17.85 seconds.

The team will get a two-week rest before competing in their first international meet Saturday, March 7 at the Embry-Riddle Eagle Invite in Daytona Beach, Florida.
