Mingoes open season at T-Bird Flyers Classic
The University of The Bahamas women's track and field team got their season underway in the T-Bird Flyers Track and Field Classic at the Thomas A. Robinson Track and Field Stadium this past weekend.
UB's head coach, Ednal Rolle said it was a great start although it was not the full team.
"The females are looking real promising this year," Rolle said. "We are starting now to meet the standards of NAIA and the athletes are now having to move towards making those standard. I am looking for the athletes to progress through the season."
Marquell Newbold won the open women's 200 meters (m), Deja Major won the open women's 100m race and the women's 4x400m won their race.
Newbold clocked 26.04 seconds to win the open women 200m final while teammate Tianna Bootle was fourth in 26.77 seconds.
"I made sure that I got out hard and carry it straight off the curve," Newbold said. "I pushed it straight to the finish and came out on top."
Major ran 12.75 seconds to win the 100m final while teammate Deamia Bowe was second in 12.80 seconds.
Newbold, Major, and Bootle teamed up with Micah Bullard to win the open women 4x400m relay in a time of 4:21.25. Bullard ran 2:33.35 to place second in the open women 800m. Lauren Stuart finished third in the open women discus after tossing the discus for 25.98m (85' 2-3/4").
