UB wraps up golf play in Florida
The University of The Bahamas golf team won three of their four matchups against Beacon College this past Saturday at the Arlington Ridge Golf Course in Leesburg, Florida.
Frederick Taylor, head coach of UB golf, said that he was proud of the freshmen's play on the course.
"It was a good golf test," Taylor said. "This being what true golf conditions meaning, you had to adapt and adjust very quickly, which they did. It never goes according to script, and this is golf,"
Winning their matchup were Payton Haye, Rachel Quant and Gia Marshall. Haye took care of James McIntyre after finishing 22 over par 93. She had a birdie on hole 16, a par five hole.
"The golf course was good," Haye said. "I definitely think there is always something to work on as a golfer no matter why you do. It was okay out there, and the greens were fast, but it was still a good round."
Quant had a tough time on the links, but she managed to shoot 31 over par 102. It was enough to get the win against Beacon's Jonah Leonhardt, who scored 57 over par 128.
"I thoroughly enjoyed it," Quant said. "It showed me some strong points and where I need to practice some more. It opened my eyes to show how blessed we are to have those courses in The Bahamas."
Marshall went against Ian Dross and won with a score of 31 over par 102. Dross finished 58 over par 129.
Travis Cartwright had a tough round against his matchup – Matthew Gibbs. Cartwright shot 35 over par 106 to finish behind Gibbs, who finished 16 over par 87.
"I started off my first hole with a nice par, and then the second hole, I came back and double bogeyed it," Cartwright said. The day didn't start off too great, but I finished it off well.
Darrius Thompson posted 55 over par 126. He said it was a difficult course for him in her round. Imani Price finished her round with a score of 58 over par 129. Dinaj Major scored 77 over par 146, and rounding the UB players was Jaidyn Roy shot 76 over par 147.
Next up for both teams is the 5th Baark Golf Tournament at the Royal Blue Golf Course on Sunday, November 16.
