Mingoes fall 7-5 to Lady Truckers
It was a better defensive display from the University of The Bahamas Mingoes women's softball team this time around but they fell 7-5 to the Johnson Lady Truckers in the New Providence Softball Association (NPSA) action.
The loss means the Mingoes now have a 0-2 win/loss record on the young season. Head coach, Shane Albury wanted the win but was content in seeing them giving up just seven runs.
"It was a little better toward the later innings," Albury stated. "The first and second innings on the field were a little rough which gave the Lady Truckers most of their runs. We started to buckle down a little as the game went on…We still have to crack down on the defense and be more consistent in our pitching."
Leading the way on offense for the Mingoes was catcher Syazha Kelly. She went 2-for-3 at-bat and finished with two runs batted in (RBI), one run and a double. Also securing a hit were lead-off batter Nabria Hamilton and first baseman Sydney Charles. Hamilton finished the game 1-for-2 and scored one run while Charles also finished 1-for-2.
Going into the top of the fourth inning, the Lady Truckers held a 7-3 lead. The Mingoes needed at least four runs to extend the game. However, they were only able to put two runs on the board in that inning. Pitcher Adonya Stanislaus and second baseman Breana Hield came home.
The Mingoes got the ball rolling early when they put two runs on the scoreboard at the top of the first inning. The Lady Truckers scored five runs in the bottom of that inning. It was an empty second inning for the Mingoes in the second inning as the Lady Truckers added two more runs to lead 7-2.
Kelly was the only one to cross the home plate in the third inning as the deficit was cut to 7-3. The Mingoes defense was solid in the bottom of the third inning as they did not give up any run. Hamilton had a superb deep catch in centerfield for the last catch.
The Lady Truckers were led by third baseman Sari Albury who went 2-for-3 and one RBI.
Next up for the Mingoes is a prime-time clash with the Sunshine Auto Wildcats on Saturday June 1 at 8.30 p.m.
