Mingoes struggle as Black Scorpions win NPSA Championship
The University of The Bahamas Mingoes softball team never recovered from a slow start against Black Scorpions as they lost 13-2 in the New Providence Softball Association (NPSA) Invitational championship game three on Friday.
It was not the start that the Mingoes wanted as the Black Scorpions took a 5-0 lead at the end of the second inning at the Banker's Field.
"It was little to no energy. We started off very flat and did not have much energy in the game and it showed," said Mingoes head coach, Shane Albury. "We did not swing the bat like we normally do. "We usually hit the ball and we did not do that tonight. We did not execute baserunning, hitting, bunting and fielding. We fell short in all aspect of the game. The pitcher had her struggles here and there with a few walks and the defense did not do what they were supposed to do."
Leftfielder Aniyah Wilmott and shortstop Solana Brown finished with one hit each. Wilmott got her hit in the third inning while Brown got hers in the following inning.
First baseman, Sydney Charles came home first for The Mingoes at the top of the fifth inning on a Black Scorpions error. Pitcher Breanna Hield then came home after Charles as both of the Mingoes runs came in that inning. The Scorpions led 10-2 at the end of the top of the fifth inning.
The Mingoes' defense picked up coming down to the final three innings of the game but the Black Scorpions' early lead was too much to overcome.
Next up for the Mingoes will be a rematch against the Black Scorpions on Thursday, May 23. It will be the Mingoes' opener in the 2024 NPSA regular season. Albury is looking forward to the rematch.
