Pilgrim’s hat-trick powers Mingoes to 5-0 season-opening win

The University of The Bahamas Mingoes got a hat-trick from Philip Pilgrim to help power them to a 5-0 clean sheet victory against the defending champions Western Warriors to open their 2025-2026 Bahamas Men's Soccer League campaign Sunday.

Pilgrim scored two goals in the second half and one in the first half at the Roscow A.L. Davies Soccer Fields to open the local season in fine form.

"Coming back from the International Tour where I was cold. As we started the league, everything was put together and we performed well tonight," Pilgrim said.

UB other goals came from their leading goalscorer last season, captain Ronaldo Green and an own goal from Warriors.

UB controlled the tempo most of the game with a mixture of buildup plays and long balls. The first goal of the night came in the 26th minute when Pilgrim controlled a long ball from Green to beat the Warriors goalkeeper to put the Mingoes up 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 at the end of the first half. Nine minutes into the second half, Pilgrim picked up his second goal of the game when he turned defense into offense. Pilgrim picked the ball off the defender on the goal line and went one-on-one with the goalie and slipped the ball near-post for his second goal of the match.

Pilgrim completed the hat-trick on a through pass from Green in the 70th minute with an easy right foot shot that went into the back of the net to put UB up with a commanding 3-0 lead. It was Green's second assist of the night.

Green, who is known for his goalscoring ability was not going to be left off the scoresheet when he got a short cross from defender Joshua Johnson in the Warriors' 18-yard box that he put away easily to extend the lead 4-0. He scored in the 90th minute.

Freshman Clerdjivensky Clerjuste was looking to put his team up 5-0 when he attacked the ball in the 18-yard box goal in injury time. He passed the ball, and it deflected off a Warriors defender and went into the back of the net to seal UB's victory.

It will be a quick turnaround for UB as they play Renegades F.C. at 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 29.
