Mingoes drop first match on international tour
The University of the Bahamas Mingoes men's soccer team came up short with 3-1 Atlantis University Atlanteans defeat on the back half of the teams' back-to-back matchup on Friday in Miami, Florida.
A goal by Mingoes' Jeremy Holland to make it 2-1 at the Kendall Soccer Parks was not enough as the Atlanteans put the game away with another goal.
Alex Thompson, Mingoes' head coach summed up the game as them not defending well especially against set pieces.
"It came down to very small details and fatigue," Thompson said. "We normally don't play back-to-back and that really worked in their favor. We didn't defend the middle of the pitch well enough. One of our big things was to prevent set pieces and corners as much as possible to protect our goalkeeper and we didn't do that well enough either."
The Atlanteans took a 2-0 lead at half-time. Coming out of half-time, the Mingoes played with intent and in the 52nd minute, Holland cleaned up a free-kick from atop the 18-yard box.
There were a couple of chances for Thompson's side to tie the game at 2-2 but the ball did not find the back of the net. It was the Atlanteans who put the game away with a 66th minute goal.
Next up for the Mingoes will be a trip to Grand Bahama where they will look to focus and regroup to play matches on October 4th and 5th.
