Mingoes comeback ends in 4-4 draw
The University of The Bahamas Mingoes dug themselves in a 3-0 hole early in the game but showed resilience as they clawed their way back against Inter Nassau for a 4-4 draw in BFA Men's League action on Sunday.
Playing at the Roscow A.L Davies Soccer Fields, center-back and captain Evelt Julmis sent the ball flying off his left foot to the top right corner for the equalizer just before the full-time whistle blew as the game ended 1-1. Both teams earned a point each.
"We had to make some early adjustments as our early formation did not work out," Head coach, Alex Thompson said. "Some of our players were sleeping in the first 10 minutes and they were able to jump out on us. We started to see some success later and then we lost our captain to an injury. We had to adapt to the situation."
Inter surprised the Mingoes by going up 3-0 before the half-time whistle blew. However, midfielder Stanley Grand Pierre kicked off the scoring for the Mingoes in the 45th minute as Inter led 3-1 heading into the intermission.
Inter went up 4-1 in the 66th minute leaving the Mingoes' backs against the wall. The Mingoes were awarded a penalty kick 11 minutes later as striker Wood Julmis calmly scored it to cut into the deficit 4-2.
Pierre got the double in the 88th minute on a free-kick after the Mingoes kept knocking on Inter's door. Inter led 4-3. The Mingoes were persistent on pressuring Inter's goal but to no avail as the game went into injury time. After being awarded a corner kick, Evelt Julmis missed the bicycle kick but was able to recover and find the back of the net as time expired.
The Mingoes have one more game remaining on their schedule for the 2023-2024 season. That game is set for at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 15 at the Roscow A.L. Davies Soccer Fields.
