Mingoes lock up BDOCS 92-81 to stay undefeated on showcase season

With another double-digit performance from newcomer Kevaro Russell, The University of The Bahamas Men's Basketball team defeated The Bahamas Department of Corrections Challengers 92-81 Thursday at The Kendall Isaacs Gymnasium in UB Showcase action.

Russell led the Mingoes with 30 points, Jerehemiah Miller had a double-double with 29 points and ten rebounds. Terrance Higgs scored 18 points to go along with three blocks.

The Mingoes dominated the game from the opening quarter. The Challengers had the lead for about one minute off a three-pointer from Donovan Rolle to go up 3-2 with 8:18 on the clock in the first quarter. Another Mingoes newcomer Terrance Higgs erased that lead with a three-pointer of his own to put UB up 5-3 at 7:34. The Mingoes never trailed after that point in the game.

The Mingoes dominated the game but took a slight lead into the half at 51-47.

Coming out of the break, the team built on the lead despite being outrebounded in the game 29-28.

Russell gave The Mingoes the biggest lead with the biggest dunk with about 5:56 to go in the game. Russell forced the steal and took off for the one-handed dunk to put The Mingoes up 83-68. Coincidentally, The Mingoes took a 15-point lead again thanks to another dunk from Miller on a fast-break opportunity to give them the 92-77 lead with about 1:30 on the clock.

Miller said the team chemistry was good and they were able to go out and play hard.

"My main focus was just to rebound the ball because I noticed the other team had a lot of tall players," Miller said. "We would like to carry over defense, and talking on the court."

Rashad Woodside led The Challengers with 22 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. While Hayward Seymour added 12 points and five rebounds.

Mingoes next play Nassau Flight Services 7pm, November 4th at Kendal Isaacs Gym.
