Mingoes drop to Ballers

The University of The Bahamas men's basketball team suffered a tough 98-85 loss at the hands of the Nassau Flight Services Ballers in the UB Basketball Showcase Thursday, December 12.

Playing at the Kendal G.L. Isaacs Gymnasium, UB got off to a good start in the first quarter and even led 22-18 at the end of the first quarter.

Leading the way for UB was Erquante Edgecombe with 29 points. Jerehemiah Miller scored 18 points and captain Theodore Grant had nine points.

"Coach was trying to get the new guys comfortable with the team," Edgecombe said. "Those guys with less experience got the chance to play and get comfortable."

Fortune changed for UB in the second quarter as their perimeter defense collapsed and faltered. The Ballers started to make those three-pointers and started to open the game for them. The score slipped away from UB as they trailed the Ballers 50-41 at the half.

Coming out of the half, UB were unable to get any momentum as the Ballers kept the game at arm's length. UB's head coach, Bacchus Rolle called a timeout when the Ballers led 64-54 with 2:33 remaining in the third quarter. The game remained a 10-point game in favor of the Ballers after three quarters with a 70-60 scoreline.

A key 10-1 run by UB that culminated with Evan Hanna's layup cut the Ballers lead to one point with a 71-70 lead. That was the closest UB got to the Ballers as the game slowly started to slip away from them.

It was the final game before the Christmas Break as the players get a break to spend time with family. When they return from the break, they will have a busy month in January traveling starting with a two-game trip January 3-4 to Freeport, Grand Bahama.
