Mingoes put Challengers on lockdown
The University of The Bahamas Mingoes men's basketball team was too much for the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services Challengers when they got the 101-74 victory on Thursday November 21.
UB used a strong second half to take control of the game that was played at the Kendal G.L. Isaacs Gymnasium.
Freshman Evan Cartwright had the hot hand for UB when he dropped 25 points. He also connected four three pointers. Erquantae Edgecombe scored 22 points, captain Theodore Grant added 17 points. Jerehemiah Miller chipped in with 10 points.
"I lived up to coach expectations," Cartwright said. "Grant and the others were not making their shots this game, so it was good that I was able to step up and make a few threes and a few stops."
Leading the way for the Challengers was Clifton Barr with 18 points that included five triples.
As mentioned earlier, UB took over the game in the second quarter when they won that quarter 28-11. They made high percentage shots and were able to get out on transition on stingy defense. Grant gave UB its first double-digit lead when he hit a corner triple to put his team up 32-21 with 2:48 left in the second quarter.
The second quarter ended with UB reserve guard Evan Hanna stealing the ball beating the buzzed to put them up 51-34.
The Challengers tried to make a push in the third quarter where they outscored UB 27-23 but trailed 78-57. UB regained control of the game in the fourth quarter where they outscored the Challengers 27-13 to secure the win.
UB finished the game with 18 steals while the Challengers had six.
Next up for the Mingoes is a second matchup against the Royal Bahamas Police Force Crimestoppers on Thursday, December 5. UB won that last contest 99-95.
