The Mingoes behind 25 points from Theodore Grant took out the Sunlight Stompers 71-70 in the UB showcase season's opening game Thursday at The Kendal Issacs Gym. Leading by no more than 5 points the entire game, Mingoes forward Gabriel Styles scored a jumper three seconds left in the final quarter to take the lead.
Grant led all scorers with 25 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists and Jeremiah Miller scored 20 points and 8 rebounds to lead the team. Guard Erquantae Edgecombe put up a double-double in the win with 12 points, 10 rebounds.
Grant said he was excited for the win especially with the team rebuilding. "With a new team, fresh legs we were trying to solve some pieces on the court," he said. "I tried to set the standard of being a scorer."
Miller said his first game was nerve wracking with plenty shoes to fill but they had a game plan to win and he had to execute. "I'm glad we go the win to start the season."
For The Stampers, Tomiko King led his team with 17 points and 4 rebounds and Michael Turnquest scored 15 points and 2 rebounds.
The Mingoes next play The Gym Rats in Grand Bahama October 11 and 12, 2024.
